After 22 years in advertising and marketing in London and yearning for a change, Penny Radford moved to Italy in 1994. She and her husband had fallen in love with Umbria while on holiday and decided that it would be the perfect location for their downshifting project.
But things ended up not going precisely to plan when her husband (now ex) decided it was not for him after all. Which was how Penny found herself alone at the top of a mountain in Umbria, living in a burned out shell of a house with a dodgy roof that came with several ruined buildings. A mini hamlet really. Many people would have decided that this was a downshift too far, but being a resourceful and determined lady, Penny resolved to make a go of it. She learned Italian at the Università per Stranieri in Perugia, got in touch with local builders and basically learned renovation as she went along.

Paul McIntyre and Penelope didn’t just fall in love with Italy when they moved to the country six years ago. They also fell in love with each other.
Paul had come over to start a fitness business as he was fed up with the weather in his native Scarborough and to leave his damp proofing and plastering company. Penny had come to Italy for a rest from her busy IT job in London, which involved a lot of travelling.
Paul’s plans for the fitness business had to be put on hold while he tackled a three-year renovation project with his ex-partner, which took him from 2004 to 2007. Penny, in the meantime, was busy working as a translator for a Le Marche real estate agent and picking up invaluable information and contacts that would stand them in good stead later on.
Leicestershire couple Dean and Lesley Mc Morran and young daughter Grace left England in January 2006 to start a new life running a country house holiday rental business near the medieval village of Mogliano in the Italian region of Le Marche.
They talk exclusively to BEV about their new life in Italy.
They made the decision back in January 2003. There were several reasons behind their reason to move to Italy. They had suffered a family bereavement and Dean was increasingly stressed in his job in the insurance business. They wanted to change their lives and work for themselves.
The couple had been to Italy frequently on holiday and loved it. But they were less than impressed with the standard of some accommodation. They felt that, despite having no experience in the tourist industry, they could easily do better than some of the places they had stayed in. And so they discussed buying a house in Italy which had enough space for them to offer holiday rentals to tourists.
